Gum disease is one of the most common diseases in the world. Often, people do not even realise they have gum disease and ignore symptoms such as bleeding after brushing or mild inflammation.

In actual fact, these symptoms are typical of gingivitis – the first stage of gum disease. While this can be treated at home by improving your oral hygiene and using special mouthwashes, sometimes it may be necessary to visit St. Michael’s Dental Care, so we can thoroughly clean your gum line.

Without treatment, gingivitis can progress into periodontal disease; the second and more severe stage of gum disease. This can lead to a number of problems, including tooth loss.

How does gum disease occur?

The main cause of gum inflammation and irritation is a build-up of plaque and poor oral hygiene. As plaque builds up on the teeth and gum line, bacteria can irritate the gums and leads to the aforementioned symptoms.

Additional risk factors for gum disease include smoking, certain medical conditions such as diabetes and cancer can make patients more vulnerable to gum disease, poor dietary choices and certain medications.

You can avoid gum disease by improving your home care routine, giving up harmful habits such as smoking and visiting our practice for regular check-ups and cleaning appointments.
